A glimpse into starting a painting!

This is a time-lapse beginning of starting a mixed media painting on a repurposed piece of plywood from the beach.

I love to start on a large painting and really slosh on the paint. I also prefer to work on wood, plywood is great; if it’s off the beach like this piece it’s even better. It already has some softened edges and it’s been banged up a bit. This works well for my style of mixed media painting.

When I create on new wood panels I usually go through a process of distressing them a bit first so that they feel good to me.

I share some of these techniques in my new course “Creative Sovereignty”. We use a visual journal to explore many of the same processes and practices that I use to create my larger art work.

Class is currently in session and I have been getting so many comments like this one:

I am love love loving this course! thank you for giving me permission to express without worrying about it being “good”!

Creative Sovereignty course

Over the years I’ve had so many people ask me if I teach. During every art show or open studio event I have people make this inquiry and request. Up till now I have always said no.

I have taught school kids and a few adults, in a super casual kind of way.

Now however I am teaching! In a loose, informal and very motivating way I am sharing my love and fascination with the creative process. ! love art and visual journaling so much that I recently created and launched an online course using visual journaling as a way to loosen and lighten up in art and in life.

The course is called Creative Sovereignty!

Sovereign is how I want to feel when I create, and I want to help others feel the same.

I will share my own personal tools, techniques and rituals, the ones that I use to keep my creative muscles flexed and stretched.

My first class is in session right NOW!

A journal is a perfect place to put all the feels, a place to express and to hold our thoughts and feelings.

Tender Brave Spirit, MY BOOK!

I can hardly believe it's true. This book idea has been percolating in me for a few years now, and the concept and idea of actually making a book felt SO daunting I kept finding reasons to put it off.

Guess what?? I wrote a BOOK!!

"Tender Brave Spirit"
(An Expressive Life Almost Missed)

WORDS AND ART BY TAMMY HUDGEON
EDITED BY ODE HOWARD

I can hardly believe it's true. This book idea has been percolating in me for a few years now, and the concept and idea of actually making a book felt SO daunting I kept finding reasons to put it off.

Last year the perfect scenario revealed itself to me, the people, the time and space to pull this through from the etherlands of the creative cloud. I found the skilled guide, the people and support group I needed to walk along with me in this process.

Let me tell you, it was DEEP dive! I was deciding whether to create a showcase type book with my best art (easiest option), or a combination book of glass and paintings (harder),  or stories and best art or to tell the story of me along with art (hardest option)!

Always ART.

It seems that the first book that needed to emerge was the story of ME and my creative path.  I wrote my book to tell the story of my creative journey as a self taught artist. I share with you the fumbles, obstacles and limiting beliefs I had to overcome to pursue this whole hearted life I'm living.

Within the pages are some of the many stories that make up my life. Resonant themes that emerge and re-emerge all along the way.

My book is also brimming with visual eye candy! I am so pleased with the print results, as you know colour is very important to me.

Extremely talented Sheila Norgate wrote a forward, as did as extremely talented Ode Howard! Such an honour for me. Ode also edited my book, and was along with me for the whole trip of many months, many explorations of content, always bringing me back from my tangents to the heart of my story. Deep gratitude.

Local Gabriola Island folks and friends can order through the "pick up" option direct from me (I will love to sign it for you too!) Purchasers from further away can order the "deliver" option, which is a print on demand service.

In lieu of a real life partay! I'm planning to host a

I'll read from my book and we can CELEBRATE!

I'll also be reading from my book over the coming days on my instagram stories. Please join me!

Thank you thank you thank you for coming along on this epic journey with me!

FYI: Sabrina Ward Harrison launched a program called "Liberate" specifically to teach people how to make an art book. The timing was perfect and I dove in. She guided, and I, and many others did all the hands on work, including the TECHNOLOGY of building a book online! this was a HUGE learning curve for me.

India Travel Journal part 1

As an HSP, highly sensitive person, one of my self soothers when traveling is my art journal.

Travel can be exhilarating and super stimulating, and I love this! AND I need to soothe my jangled nerves most every day at some point.

I made two mixed media art journals while I was traveling, while I was backpacking for 4 months throughout incredible India. This is my larger journal, which I played in when I was in a locale for a couple of weeks. We stayed in Pushkar Rajasthan for 3 weeks, and in a tiny village in Goa in South India for 4 weeks. The rest of the time we were riding trains and buses and rickshaws and moving about.

I also created a smaller journal, which I will share in my next post. It is more of the day to day of travel, I had it with me in my daypack most of the time, unlike this one which I mainly worked on in my own room.

Travel and Play in Rajasthan, India

My traveling companion, life partner and creative collaborator and I traveled to Rajasthan India this past winter, spending almost 3 months in the state! This truly was the journey of a lifetime, and I have no doubt I will go again someday. T

A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.
— Mahatma Gandhi

Oh India how I love you!

My traveling companion, life partner and creative collaborator and I traveled to Rajasthan India this past winter, spending almost 3 months in the state! This truly was the journey of a lifetime, and I have no doubt I will go again someday. Textile much?? ohhh la la!

India always has an abundance of colour and light and Rajasthan was even more intensely flavoured than I thought. We arrived in Delhi in December and left the city within hours as we saw and smelled for ourselves how smoky and polluted the air is at that time of year. We had planned to spend a few days, having never been there and knowing that in the city there is one of the biggest markets in South Asia, Chowdi Chowk, amongst many other delights.

We instead headed to Jaipur! The PINK city. 6 million souls, a HUGE city by Canadian standards. This was our first taste of north India, after having only traveled in the south in the past. We LOVED it. And we were overwhelmed by it. The wonders and charms though won us over, with glorious streets filled with sari shops, bangle shops, and the thriving intensity of a city on the move. It felt stimulating beyond measure coming from our quiet west coast tiny island life.

We ate and drank street food, always a no no, but still we did and we survived and thrived. Fresh whipped lassis, fresh veg juice and samosa stands with yummy chutney!

And yes, it was very busy, extremely noisy and polluted too! We went to Amber Fort, nearby the city and it was a blessing to be within a palace and fort out of the hectic big city. It was filled with many tourists, mostly Indians visiting their own landmarks. It felt very fun to be touring with people of India admiring their own heritage.

The palaces are incredible! And the PEOPLE?? Amazing!!

p.s. also, my big love…TEXTILES! pix to come.

Gabriola Thanksgiving Studio Tour was a smashing success here at Studio #53! Ode’s Alchemy Shop and I had an abundance of happy people, sweet golden weather, and super supportive community!

Some of these pix show pieces that were SOLD! Other pix show old friends and new ones too. This was my 16th year in the Gabriola Studio Tour. Every now and then I think, I’m going to take a year off. And then when it comes time I sign up again. The opportunities that result from the tour are too good to pass up. Most of the publicity is done collectively, so it’s much easier than launching a solo studio show. Plus, masses of people are here on the island especially for ART so my studio might be one of the chosen stops, people I might not otherwise meet. I also have people come to my studio on the recommendation of other artists, which is a super boon!

One visitor said this beautiful sentiment:

“Arriving in your studio is like walking into a dream.”

Thank YOU all for coming to visit, to bring gifts, to leave with new pieces for your collections.

I have deep appreciation and immense gratitude.

xoxo

Wild Queendom Celebrations!

During 3 weeks this summer I had my newest works on display in an exhibition right here on my home turf of beautiful Gabriola Island. My partner and beloved Ode Howard, of Ode’s Alchemy Shop and I created some of the larger pieces in collaboration. He builds and forms all the steel parts and he also assists greatly in brainstorming how to design the infrastructure that support the tall pieces.

Sovereignty

Your life is your QUEENDOM, to cultivate and cherish. Sovereignty is the sphere of love, personal power, appreciation and personhood, within which prosperity, freedom and relationships flourish. You create a sovereign life through your daily choices and actions.

Like the CAMELS! The camels, namely Camille and baby Clancy are what I call “Post Modern Folk Art” . They are made out of a mixture of materials including wood, metal, glass, paint, and collage. We spent most of the spring making them, along with many other pieces in the show.

More and more I’m living my life with no separation of life, work and play. While many of the pieces in this show were challenging to create, the process of creating was more fully merged with living my full life. This made the whole process very fulfilling for me. And I’m told I was much easier to be around and to live with as a result of my new ways. YAY!

EnJOY some pix of the show! And let me know if you’re shopping for a camel, because these camels are an excellent investment. xo

Salish Sea Sails Installation

Over the winter last year and early this year my partner and skilled metal artist Ode and I designed and created an art installation piece for a private residence.

We worked closely with the clients and fairly quickly came up with an idea for the space. The clients love of sailing led them to send me a small diagram of sails that I took and worked with until we had a template to create with.

Then we did it! Here are the results!

Gallery Merrick

Wild Innocence, an ART show.

We had a fun time at the opening and party of my recent art show at Gallery Merrick. It was very rewarding to see my creations ALL TOGETHER in one place, with lots of space around.

I was showing with the fab painter Paul Jorgensen and opening night was a blast.

Gallery Merrick is a new gallery in downtown Nanaimo. It is owned and operated by the fabulously fantastic Joe Bembridge, a man who knows his biz and bring a lot of heart to his work.

Thank you to all who came to see and feel!

Colours of India Part 2

As some of you know, I love colour.

I also like to spell the word colour in the Canadian way, rather than spell it without the extra "u" as in color.

This past winter we lived, loved and enjoyed our lives for 4 months in a small village in South India. It was an amazing, restful, dynamic, energizing, stimulating, wondrous way to spend a Canadian winter.

It was HOT there! I couldn't and didn't approach my life with same kind of productiveness or intensity as I do when I'm here on Gabriola Island and in my own studio. For me, venturing out meant always planning for how to accommodate the mid day heat wave. We often went to markets to meet and see local village life, all the colours, sounds and smells.

Indian women have a way of looking beautiful, calm, cool and collected even during the intense heat, sitting all day selling their wares. I often felt like a limp dishrag almost before beginning to shop in the market.

We went each week to gather fresh fruits, veggies and assorted household items. Markets can be very intense with the noise, heat and smells. I loved it, but def needed to go for a swim in the nearby sea soon after.

I'm grateful for my travel experiences.

India is a place where color is doubly bright. Pinks that scald your eyes, blues you could drown in. – Kiran Millwood Hargrave
